Review: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Review: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy |
| Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy Posted: I bought this game because my very trusted gaming magazine (Game Informer) rated this game 9.0/10. It was very cheap for a new game, and it sounded kind of cheezy, but I decided to give it a chance. The graphics in the game are very nice, but the cutscenes are not as polished as some games. However, the game plot kind of pulls you in, making you wonder what's going to happen next. There are several bosses in the game, none of which I've played yet, but they remind me of Metal Gear Solid bosses. You are well aware of their presence and powers (each one specializes in one of the various psi powers), and you recognize their abilities as above yours. This appealed to me as it is building suspense throughout the game. The psi powers are lots of fun. Telekinesis (reminds me of push/choke of the Jedi Knight games) is a lot of fun. It can be used on just about every object in the game (and there are always plenty of things to throw). At one point, I remember seeing a gaurd around the corner, and instead of stepping out and getting in a fire fight, I grabbed an explosive barrel, and threw it blindly around the corner. It nailed him dead on and cooked him crispy. The other powers are fun as well. Mind drain is particularly awesome, because as you drain your enemy his head eventually explodes!! (the only downside is Mind Drain only works as a stealth kill or on a dead enemy--yielding less power). The game is EASILY played either stealthily or full on war (an element lacking in other games who claim this is possible). Fighting with guns is decent, though psi powers are funner. My only complaint is that sometimes I appear to be locked on, and when I unload my gun on an enemy, I end up hitting the top of the box in front of me or something stupid.... You can also only carry one primary weapon (rifle, shotgun, etc.) in addition to your silenced pistol at any one time. Even the simplest moves you are able to perform are fun, and there are several points in the game where you can kill guards in special ways (sucking them into a fan, throwing them in a crematorium furnace). You get to throw objects at them, use them for cover (not like Splinter cell, but hold them with TK). You can use Remote Viewing to walk (out of body--thus invisibly) into the next room to scout ahead, and do numerous other things. I wouldn't say it is the best game out there, but it is definitely fun--even if you're just goofin around. The controls are easy easy easy and sometimes it is fun just throwin people around (which is the first power you get). I give the game an 8/10 because some things felt choppy, and the plot seems sort of half copied half badly written, but nonetheless suspenseful and OK. There is not very much gore--in fact, I think the only gore that is even apparent is when a special kill is made (sucking them into a fan) or when you stealthily Mind Drain a live guard. I definitely recommend a rental or a cheap purchase (as long as you pay no more than $30--the price I got at Wal-Mart). |

Review: Crash Twinsanity
Review: Crash Twinsanity |
| Posted: *CRASH BANDICOOT - TWINSANTIY(XBOX)* I was pleasantly suprised after playing this even though it doesn't seem to be getting much praise. This game is a blast with tons of eye-candy, very fun and challenging levels, at times, very challenging. My kids(10 and 7) play most of the time but every once and a while they have to call upon "The Master Video Gamer"(Me-38) to help them through a section. I can't help but get caught up into it while playing, so much so, the kids have to remind me to give the controller back. It's fun! Look, I've been a Crash fan since the beginning(PS1) and this is a fantastic addition to the series. Even though there's no furriness(I don't think that's a word?) to Crash like the first XBOX Crash and the graphics are alittle on the PS2 side(which isn't bad by any means) the game is very fun and beautiful to look at. I guess I'm just trying to figure out why all the hate? If you're a Crash Bandicoot fan, you'll love it. |

Review: Halo 2
Review: Halo 2 |
| Posted: I loved the original Halo. It had everything I wanted in a game. Good graphics, excellent story, and lots of action. Halo 2 is essentially its predecessor, except better. I know that sounds unlikely, but the few things that I didn't like about the original game such as bad Marine AI and monotonous maps are gone in this version. For example, I was playing last night, and I was on the second level where you and a team of Marines are going through an African city killing everything. A Marine in front of me gets killed as soon as he rounds a corner. Instead of charging ahead, the rest of the squad hugs the wall. So, I swap my sniper rifle for Sarge's auto rifle (another kickass feature, you can swap guns with marines). Since the Marines are better shots, Sarge charges ahead and takes out the Covenant sniper. The marines and I then charge ahead and waste the covenant. Here is a summary of cons and pros about the game. PROS: Marines are much, much more intelligent. You can swap guns with marines. marines can drive vehicles on their own now. the flood return AH TOO MANY TO LIST CANT LIST THEM ALL Cons: The only bad things I noticed so far were some minor graphial glitches, such as guns and vehicles sticking through walls. Also, every time it loads a charecter in a cutscene, a milisecond later the game seems to "draw" the person. It is kind of wierd looking, but in no way hurts the game. If you are into a good sci-fi story or lots of action get this game. Also, Halo 1 fans wont be dissapointed, all changes were for the better. |

Review: Xbox LIVE 3 Month Gold Membership
Review: Xbox LIVE 3 Month Gold Membership |
| Xbox LIVE 3 Month Gold Membership Posted: To start off, I'd like to say that X-Box Live is amazing and worth every penny. Online gaming is incredibly fun and quite a good way to pass time. That aside, there are downsides to X-Box Live that can be avoided through prepaid cards. Number one, you always run the risk that unwarranted transactions will be made if your credit card information is stored on your X-Box 360 system. It may not happen all that often, but it's best to avoid it all together. The biggest reason to buy prepaid Xbox Live card is the renewal process that happens when you don't use one. If you order X-Box Live through your system, it'll renew every time your subscription runs out. This wouldn't be a problem except that it's not that easy to cancel. Instead of canceling through your system, you have to go through the hassle of actually calling X-Box Live support. Even then, depending on the representative you get, you may be hassled to keep your subscription because they really don't want you to cancel it. I'm guessing that's part of their job to convince you to keep it, but it still is frustrating to the person that is trying to cancel it. You'll have to go through this process every time you want to cancel if you don't use a prepaid card. Is that hassle really worth it? I don't think so. Therefore, avoid all of the problems by simply buying a prepaid card. You won't be sorry. UPDATE: (3/6/2011): I updated this review about a year ago pointing out that you could disable the subscription on X-Box Live's website. As of this update, they've taken that feature away again. I'm guessing Microsoft must have seen a major increase on people who canceled their subscription, thus now forcing you to call their customer service hot-line again to cancel.... Even if they add it back, just save yourself the hassle and get a prepaid card. You never have to worry about dealing with customer service that will try their hardest to get you to stay on as a recurring customer. Amazon also gives great deals throughout the year. You could save yourself $20 to $30 sometimes just by checking to see if Amazon has these prepaid cards on sale. What's not to love about that? |

Review: Xbox 360 LIVE 1600 Points
Review: Xbox 360 LIVE 1600 Points |
| Posted: This is a lot better than doing it through your xbox. For one, no tax. The other reason, for me at least, is that if you put your credit card into xbox live, you cant remove it. You can change it, but it will always have a credit card on file. Buying these points through xbox live would have cost me $54.12. I would rather save that $4.12, thank you. |

Review: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Review: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind |
| The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Posted: Okay, Okay, I'll admit it; I was reconsidering the wisdom of my Xbox purchase. I watched GTA3 (and played it), and shook my head, saying "why not us?" Well hallelujah, we've been saved! If you've ever played a pen-and-paper RPG, you'll have an inkling about the possibilities in this game. Your character can be whomever, whatever, however you'd like him/her to be. There are four human races alone, as well as a feline race, a reptilian race, orc, and three elven races. There are dozens of character classes, including BattleMage, Assassin, Monk, Rogue, Scout, Barbarian, and Witchhunter, and a bunch more; but the best part is that you can create your OWN custom character class with its own assorted disciplines! There are also a ton of possibilities for the appearance of each gender of each race. Once your character has been designed and you get out of the Customs Office, you are immersed in a HUGE, complex world of alliances, rivalries, and politics. You can join a number of different organizations and affiliations, make friends or enemies everywhere. The fighting in this game is cool, easy when you're fighting single little creatures like cave rats, but challenging when you're fighting talented folks in armor while trying to cast spells and read scrolls while hacking, slashing, and blocking. And multiple humanoid enemies in armor will realistically kick your butt, unless you've been around a long time and improved your fighting abilities. This is perhaps the best thing about this game; your advancement is not based on "XP", some accumulation of wealth and creatures killed. It is realistic; the more you practice something, the better you get at it. ... If you spend all of your time hacking at creatures in the wilderness, your Strength and Agility attributes and your weapon skill (ShortBlade, Axe, Long Blade, etc.) will benefit, but your Intelligence, & Personality attributes and Mercantile, Speechcraft, Security skills etc. will stay where they are. Also, your advancement in levels is customized to your character class: each class has its own mix of emphasis amongst the skills, declaring some Major, some Minor, and some Miscellaneous. The graphics in this game are phenomenal (mostly--the faces are somewhat blocky). Trees, hills, items, and rooms look great; weather effects are fantastic. The effect most folks will appreciate, however, is the water. The water in this game looks so darn real that it's almost UNDERwhelming. You look at it and say "well, I've seen that before." The catch is, the place you've seen it before is REAL LIFE! It's amazing, and that BEFORE rain starts to fall. Oh, the sounds are cool, too -- I hope you're not afraid of thunder! This is defnitely the MOST complex and MOST open-ended game I've ever heard, seen, read about, or played. I don't mean to sound like a job interview, but it's only weakness is that it's SO open-ended. Players will find themselves accepting quest after quest before they finish their first few, and trying to flip through the character's journal to remember who wanted what! Another way this game is like life. Go get this game, you'll never see the light of day again. lol Mike |
